“It was a disappointing result, of course,” Tuchel said after the game. “I’m not sure if we deserved a little bit better. We felt like we were stuck for a long time in the game. Not as enthusiastic as we should have been.”

“We defended well for most of the first half and our best moment was when we were down 2-1. We let the first two goals go too easily. And We have to defend better.”

“The reaction after going behind was good. We came back with more energy, more freedom, more flow and more aggression. We had a clear chance to equalize.”

Before conceding 3-1 in stoppage time. England almost equalised 2-2 in the 84th minute after substitute Jude Bellingham fired home from close range. But unfortunately the referee checked VAR and ruled again that Levi Colwill had committed handball.

The German coach said of the disallowed goal: “I just saw the footage. It looks more like a shoulder than a hand.”

“I think it should have been a goal and there should have been a clear review. This is the first time a referee has gone back and reviewed an incident after a goal was awarded.”
